Chapter Four: Respite

“Do you ever think that someone used Magyk to create coffee?” Alda looks up from her steaming cup to see the two boys sitting across from her. “Uh, no?” “Your opinion doesn’t count.” Alda crinkles her nose at Tulm, who’s currently enjoying a steaming cup of chai. Somehow, he seems to think that coffee is horrid, as they’d discovered at the desk of the coffee shop. “I’m still not sure how I never knew that before,” Sars throws an almost wounded look at Tulm, “Coffee is sacred.” Alda chuckles to herself. How long has it been since I’ve been able to just sit with friends and engage in mindless chatter? For that matter, how long has it been since I’ve been able to enjoy a cup of coffee? It’s amazing how each day can seem a week, each week a month, and each month an eternity, when you’re locked away with no hope of salvation. Not to mention the torture. She shudders a bit. She hadn’t mentioned it anyone yet, but it wasn’t just Magykal “experiments” th...

Chapter 3: Escape

She blinked and her surroundings changed. One moment she was sitting in the dungeon, where that monster seemed to be trying to dissect her, and now she’s sitting in a rather posh chair in front of a roaring fireplace. Bound like a sloppy mummy, but still sitting here. Straining against her bonds, she cranes her neck, trying to see the rest of the room. A high vaulted ceiling rose above her, and the floor was littered with fancy furniture around tables bending under the weight of tomes and manuscripts. Off to her left she could see a door, presumably leading back down to the dungeons, going by how drab it is. On her right, she could see another door, this one of ornate wood with gold detailing, heading off to who knows where. Oh, she couldn’t forget the zombies, could she? Everywhere she looked she could see those abominations shambling about, some of the older ones groaning, but the newer ones speaking through decaying lips and throats, occasionally losing bits of flesh. Not that...

Chapter Two: Two is Greater than One

“So why are we hiding in bushes?” “Because we haven’t figured out how to get inside without dying.” “Oh yeah.” It’s the third day since they left the Tower of the Gift, and so far the mission seemed hopeless. Several months ago another Apprentice went missing while on a mission. Alda Safada was a Space and Lightning specialist, sent to investigate some suspicious activity that was being reported around some old ruins in the Delnari Region. When she hadn’t returned after a couple months they decided something was wrong and started putting together plans for a rescue team. And now, here they are, two kids barely old enough to go on missions, let alone rescue people, but the Professor thought they were old enough, so here they are, staring at a building that’s definitely not ruins anymore, wondering how the hell they’re going to get in. “Got any ideas?” Tulm speaks up again as the silence draws on. “Sorry, Tulm, I got distracted.” He sighs, looking around. We were told it shoul...

Chapter One: Beginnings

Sars yawns, stretches, then curses as he falls out of bed. Ugh, lovely. Great way to start your 17 th birthday, isn’t it. “You okay, Sars?” His best friend, Tulm, lifts his head from his own pillow. “Yeah, just peachy. I simply fell out of bed is all,” he snipes back, then immediately regrets it. He is just trying to be kind, after all, him and his ever flowing fountain of kindness. “Sorry, I was just checking….” Tulm trails off, sounding hurt. Sars sighs, “No, I’m sorry, I’m just being irritable.” As always. “If you’d like I can Mend you,” the Life and Earth apprentice says. “Nah, I know the basic, I can do it myself.” “You know it’s less effective on yourself.” Sars doesn’t respond, not having actually known that. That does explain a few things, I guess. Tulm shrugs, “Your body.” “Alright, magyk man, do your thing.” He half chuckles, rolling his eyes, as he stands up and goes over to his friend. Tulm smiles as sits up, swinging his legs over the edge of the be...

Prelude: A Dawning Light

Sars Al’Kodrid looks around, Where am I? As his senses come back to him he notices the sound of a creek burbling in the background. Trees slowly come into focus around him, and he can see korths looping around trees as they flew overhead. Ah, that’s right, Delnari. He gets up and stretches, noticing blue runes on his arms glowing faintly and catalogues that for inspection later, right now he needs to figure out where exactly he is and why he can’t remember anything. As he turns around he suddenly flinches and brings his arm up to block the sunlight, which in turn makes him notices some red runes, glowing a little brighter than the blue ones on his other arm. Alright, what the heck. What am I, a marked pig? He shakes his head, at least he knows which way to go now, westward towards the rising sun, towards the bustling city of Talmindu. 6 hours later, Sars is among the bustling crowds making their way into and out of the city. Ah the city life, I remember this, especially the bu...
